<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: large;">We are so excited to be participating in the upcoming Summer Sampler Soiree at <a href="http://www.atticneedlework.com/index.html">Attic Needlework</a> in Mesa, AZ, August 17 - 19. Here is a peek at one of the projects we will be teaching. This hand-painted hornbook has a tiny button keep on one side, and a miniature marking sampler on the other. It measures approximately 3 x 5 1/2 inches including the handle - perfect for tucking into your stitching box or hanging in your stitching nook!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: large;">We will also be teaching Learn to Lucet, as well as a wool version of our lucet pocket so that you can transport your in-process lucet cord with ease.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: large;">This promises to be a fun-filled weekend with projects from 8 designers and an optional PJ party! Beat the summer heat indoors at this great rate - we can't wait to see you there!</span></div>

We've finally recovered (mostly) and are back to blogging. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: large;">Our lucet Make it! Take it! Sell it! hands on demos were a great success! Thanks to everyone who participated. We hope all of you had a chance to practice on your trips home, and are getting comfortable with the technique. If you do have any questions, please e-mail us and we'll work you through it. We'd love to see shops teaching their customers this traditional craft. We plan to have color photos from the instructions posted soon here and on our website, and we're trying out some different materials so hopefully you'll be seeing more designs using this cord soon.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: large;">We even taught our stewardess about the lucet on our flight and she's looking forward to giving it a try. It was such a fantastic trip!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: large;">Be sure to pick your favorite colors to stitch Taby's Needle Cushion. We've shown it here in Raspberry, but are working on blue, green, hot pink, and even black! It uses a matching color pearl 5 for the lucet cord trim, and coordinating felted wool for the back and the needle strip.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: large;">We recently received our newest reproduction back from our fantastic stitcher, Deb. We're working on the frame and chart layout, and will be sharing a sneak peek with you very soon.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: large;">Until then, back to the workshop!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: 'trebuchet ms'; font-size: 130%;">Join us at the TNNA Nashville Needlework Market at the Make it! Take it! Sell it! event. We'll teach you how to make lucet cord in just 15 minutes. Practice on your ride home and you'll be an expert by the time you arrive. If you are unable to visit us at Market, please ask for us at your local needlework shop, or contact us on the web for a list of locations that carry our products.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: trebuchet ms;">
<span style="font-family: 'trebuchet ms'; font-size: 130%;">Lucet cord is a wonderful alternative to twisted cord and it’s so easy to make. This square cord can be worked in many fibers, and may be embellished with beads for a unique look. It has many uses including trimming ornaments and pillows, lacing, and even jewelry!</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: trebuchet ms;">
<span style="font-family: 'trebuchet ms'; font-size: 130%;">We'll be releasing a new chart and finishing instructions for 'Taby's Needle Cushion' at the Market too. This original design is a clever new way to keep your pins and needles handy, without losing the needles through the cushion. It is designed to be finished with lucet cord. We're stitching and finishing the model right now, and a sneak peek photo will follow soon.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: trebuchet ms;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'trebuchet ms'; font-size: 130%;"> Two other new designs are also being prepared for release in Nashville - another reproduction sampler - 'Jane Osborn', and the second in our <span style="font-weight: bold;">American Quilt</span> series, '54-40 or Fight'.</span></div>

<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'trebuchet ms';"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'trebuchet ms';"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">When I was living in Milwaukee, we used to go out to eat at a nouveau Italian restaurant called Louise's. It was definitely a favorite, and after Mom moved from Wisconsin, we'd try to go there every time she came to town for a visit. They make their own fresh pasta, and all of the dishes are delectable, but one in particular always kept me wanting more. When I moved to Arizona, I decided to try to recreate the taste of this dish (since I couldn't reasonably fly to Milwaukee every time I was craving it!) and after many near-misses, I think I've got it very close! Granted, I don't usually make my own fettucini pasta, but this recipe is just the thing to ease those cravings!</span></span><br />
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'trebuchet ms', serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'trebuchet ms', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Clean and cut 2 lbs chicken tenders into bite-sized pieces.</span></span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'trebuchet ms', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Sauté chicken in 2T olive oil until lightly golden.</span></span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'trebuchet ms', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Add 1 crushed garlic clove to the chicken and cook just until translucent.</span></span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'trebuchet ms', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Add 1/2 bottle of a non-oaky Chardonnay to deglaze the pan. (We use Barefoot - it's inexpensive and adds a good flavor without being overwhelming)</span></span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'trebuchet ms', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Add 1 can of low-sodium chicken broth - you can use homemade chicken stock here if you have it, but prepared broth works very well.</span></span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'trebuchet ms', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Allow the chicken to simmer over low heat until the liquid is reduced by about half. This will allow the wine and garlic to flavor the chicken, as well as keeping the final dish from being too liquid. I usually let it simmer as long as I can, covering the pan if it seems to be losing too much liquid. When the stock is reduced, and you're ready to proceed, add approximately 2 oz of sun-dried tomatoes, julienned. I use the dry-packed tomatoes, not the ones in olive oil.</span></span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'trebuchet ms', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Once the tomatoes have softened a bit, and about 1/4 cup of fresh-grated parmesan cheese and allow it to melt into the sauce. </span></span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'trebuchet ms', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Add 1/2 pint heavy cream (or a little more if you like it really creamy). I tried this using half & half, and found that to get the right texture I needed more than 1/2 pint, and then it was too runny, so I just use the heavy cream and try to keep the rest of the meal light. This does make a lot of pasta, so I figure the amount of cream in one serving isn't too horrible.</span></span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'trebuchet ms', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Stir in 1 lb of cooked pasta. I like to add the pasta a bit at a time, until the balance of pasta to sauce seems good - This sometimes means I have some pasta left over - I just freeze it for another use.</span></span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'trebuchet ms', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Serve hot, with fresh parmesan and sliced green onions to sprinkle over the top. Enjoy!</span></span></div>

The frame is available in any size, with or without the chain. The molding itself is about 1 inch wide. We've chosen the primitive finish for these two chain-frames. Both of these have the red color peeking through, but the frame is equally gorgeous in other colors. The first shows off one of Carriage House Designs 'Tavern Signs' lovingly and beautifully stitched by Jean Lea. While researching Saratoga, we learned about the Battle of Saratoga, which was a major turning point in the American Revolutionary War. It was here that General John Burgoyne and the British forces were surrounded and defeated in a month long series of events highlighted by two battles in September and October 1777. Word of Burgoyne's defeat reached Benjamin Franklin in Versailles in December, and t</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" line-height: 19px; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">wo days later, King Louis XVI assented to negotiations for an alliance. Found a half pork roast in the freezer that needed to be used up, so I decided to make slow-cooker taco (or burrito, enchilada - you get the picture) filling. This is the easiest recipe yet, and I tried it the next week with chicken breasts and it was great like that too. Next is to try beef - might try a chuck roast if it goes on sale soon. Otherwise any good roasting type of meat would work.<br /><br />Approx. 2 lb. meat ( I cut the loin into 1 inch slices so I could brown it a bit for the extra flavor. Chicken just gets thrown in as is. I think I'll brown the beef in slices, makes it easier to break apart later)<br /><br />2 cans petite diced tomatoes with green chiles - I use the original Ro-Tel, but I know there are other brands out there too.<br /><br />1/2 - 1 tsp chili powder (amount depends on how spicy you like it - my folks are good with 1/2 tsp - I could go a bit hotter. I used Chili 3000 from Penzeys)<br /><br />1 medium onion, chopped.<br /><br />That's it! Just mix it all together in the slow-cooker, and leave it alone. I start my cooker on High to get it going, and then turn it down to Low for the rest of the day. Follow the instructions for your cooker .<br />When the meat has cooked for several hours - usually 5 or more, break it up into shreds with a wooden spoon. If it seems a bit too watery, you can leave the lid open a crack to dry it out.<br /><br /></span></span></span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); line-height: 20px; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Serve as tacos with cheese, sour cream, tomatoes, lettuce, etc. Also especially yummy atop a salad, or stuffed into enchiladas. I played around with one recipe that I found and tweaked it to not be too garlicky (for Mom and Dad) with a touch of heat (for me) I had some Penzey's ground chipotle in the fridge and no fresh peppers, and actually, I like the slightly smoky heat better!</span></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size:13px;"><div class="post hentry uncustomized-post-template" style="margin-top: 0.5em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-left: 0px; border-bottom-width: 1px; border-bottom-style: dotted; border-bottom-color: rgb(204, 204, 204); padding-bottom: 1.5em; "><div class="post-body entry-content" style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.75em; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 1.6em; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;font-size:11px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"><br />Hope you try it and also that you enjoy!<br /><br />3 ripe avocados, peeled<br />2 tbsp lime juice<br />1 tsp salt<br />1 medium garlic clove - minced or crushed<br />1/2 cup diced onion (I used yellow, but red is really pretty)<br />scant 1/8 tsp ground chipotle (depending on how much heat you like)<br />1 roma tomato - 1/4 inch dice<br /><br />Using a pastry blender (this works REALLY well!) or a fork, mash two on the avocados with the lime juice, salt, and chipotle powder until mostly smooth. In children's education, they were used as primers for study. Printed paper or parchment was attached to a paddle-shaped piece of wood. A thin sheet of horn, made by soaking animal horn in cold water to remove it from the bone, and then boiling to soften, was attached to the board using tacks, or a thin strip of metal that was tacked around the edge. The horn served to protect the paper from grubby fingers and wear. Usually a hornbook was printed with the letters of the alphabet, the vowels in a line, and the vowel combinations with the consonants in a tabular form. The Trinitarian formula - "in the name of the Father, the Son, and of the Holy Ghost" and the Lord's Prayer were commonly found following the letters. Occasionally, the arabic numerals appeared as well.</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms', fantasy;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms', -webkit-fantasy;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">On English hornbooks, a cross appeared before the first row of letters, this was called '</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">C</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">h</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">r</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">i</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">s</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">t</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">'</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">s</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"> </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">C</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">r</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">o</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">s</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">s</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">'</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"> </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">a</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">n</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">d</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"> </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">c</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">a</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">m</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">e</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"> </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">t</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">o</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"> </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">b</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">e</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"> </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">k</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">n</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">o</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">wn</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"> </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">a</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">s</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"> the </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">'</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">c</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">r</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">i</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">s</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">s</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">-</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">c</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">r</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">o</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">s</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">s.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">' A pupil was expected to cross himself before beginning the lesson. The first is painted in a new color for us, 'Nantucket', and the graining style is based on one by Primitive Traditions' Cathy Campbell. We're tentatively calling it 'Peacock', because that's the first thing that popped into our minds when we saw it on this color, but that name may change before we make it official.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></div><div><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDNLWxtRLbyl9eukDbwF8JGd21XyiftsnuPHcQ3Ey5yYik0uIPbnNWBoh5MhB0OW_aaWqgLDlmYjhZvK6ztsEl4PvmGjwY5acSw0tUfl-gcW4ASFe2Ywqz1KNN1-x5QEdiOvu8siN0JeOM/s1600-h/100_1641.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 336px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDNLWxtRLbyl9eukDbwF8JGd21XyiftsnuPHcQ3Ey5yYik0uIPbnNWBoh5MhB0OW_aaWqgLDlmYjhZvK6ztsEl4PvmGjwY5acSw0tUfl-gcW4ASFe2Ywqz1KNN1-x5QEdiOvu8siN0JeOM/s400/100_1641.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5385465832035918914" /></a><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms', fantasy;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"><br /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">Many of our early frame designs are based on Cathy's, which unfortunately became unavailable since she closed her framing business to focus on designing. It's beautiful in this color, and I'm excited to try the grain on a more 'natural' looking color to see how it turns out. One of my favorite things is to try to reproduce the look of natural woods, and this burled look, as well as the birdseye grain have quickly become favorites. </span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms', fantasy;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">It's amazing that such a simple technique allows such varied and lovely results, and we find that the grains vary immensely just between the two of us. It's slow going as I'm learning as I go, but a: I'm learning a LOT, and b: it's a LOT of fun! I'm also taking a web design class on Wednesday nights so that's helping me get up to speed. </span></span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms', fantasy;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">So far, things are shaping up well - the site (as it exists on my computer) now has photos, a navigation bar that works (!), and a nice, simple design. We like the way it's looking! Right now we're working on getting the logo finalized, and the welcome page design finished. But we're getting there, and hope to be live sometime in the next month to month-and-a-half. </span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms', fantasy;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">I have a couple more sneak peeks to put up here, and I've been working on writing up a few recipes as well. We hope to put up some tips soon if all goes smoothly (It's amazing how hard it is to get things done with a toddler around!) Stay tuned ~ there's a lot more to come!</span></span></div>Priscillahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16568381343550360857noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9049764209504019453.post-61933033450815785752009-07-24T16:01:00.004-07:002009-07-24T16:04:40.346-07:00History of false-graining<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms', fantasy;"><br /></span></p><p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">I wanted to write a little bit about the history of false-graining, as most of our frames are finished in this technique. Faux wood graining originated primarily in 17th century England and France, and became popular in America from the late 18th to early 19th century. During this time, faux finishing techniques were so refined, it was difficult to distinguish a false-grained piece from the real wood! These techniques were used on everything from furniture and boxes to wall panels and doors.</span></span></p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"><br /></span></span></p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">Faux painting emerged as a way to make inexpensive materials look like their much more valuable cousins. Woods such as pine were painted and finished to resemble oak, mahogany and cherry, and allowed people to furnish and decorate in a style much more lavish looking than they could afford. In our modern times, the supply of many hardwoods such as rosewood and burled woods are dwindling and have been protected by law, and false-grain finishing once again is emerging as a craft.</span></span></p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"><br /></span></span></p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">We finish our frames in two styles of graining - in some instances we try to simulate the look of a real wood grain. Other graining is fun and fanciful, with colors and designs to accentuate the framed piece.</span></span></p>Priscillahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16568381343550360857noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9049764209504019453.post-30028672727155158682009-07-22T10:03:00.005-07:002009-07-24T16:04:27.146-07:00Updates<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"><div><br /></div>I've made some layout and design updates to the site since setting it up yesterday.
